SEATTLE, Wash., October 16, 2008 - The Seattle Times Endorses Todd Gibson for the 33rd District
Seattle Times editorial
“SOME seat openings and a little party switching make for fascinating legislative contests in South and East King County. Our endorsements:
• Two seats are being contested in the 33rd Legislative District, which includes Des Moines, SeaTac, Normandy Park, parts of Kent and Tukwila.
In Position 1, we recommend Republican small-business owner Todd Gibson. Legislative shoes left by the retirement of Rep. Shay Schual-Burke are enormous. So too are the challenges facing the next Legislature, including a $3.2 billion budget deficit.
Gibson is a political newcomer who is a quick study of the changing landscape in Olympia. In the current economic downturn, Gibson’s voice for limited taxes is a courageous and important one. He will have a steep learning curve but should be served well by his sharp instincts. Gibson is responsive to needs, such as for affordable health care, and some of his solutions — more-flexible insurance packages for employers and employees — will not empty state coffers.”
SEATTLE, Wash., September 26, 2008 - The Association of Washington Business Endorses Todd Gibson for State Representative from the 33rd District During These Challenging Economic Times
State Legislative Candidate Todd Gibson Wins Prestigious Small Business Endorsement
OLYMPIA, Wash., July 29, 2008 – The representative group for Washington’s largest employer and biggest job-generator today gave its endorsement to Todd Gibson for election to the open state House of Representatives Position 1 seat in the 33rd Legislative District of the Washington Legislature.
The 33rd District includes all or parts the King County communities of Des Moines, Kent, Normandy Park, and SeaTac. In making its endorsement, the National Federation of Independent Business Washington SAFE Trust, the political-action committee of NFIB/Washington, the state’s largest small-business advocacy organization, praised Gibson for his 100-percent score on the NFIB SAFE Trust candidate questionnaire. Endorsements for incumbents are based on support or opposition to 15 bills in the 2007 and 2008 sessions of the Legislature that were important to small business. The bills can be viewed at http://www.nfib.com/page/homeWA.html. Legislative incumbents must have a 70-percent or better pro-small-business voting record in order to be eligible for an endorsement from the NFIB/Washington SAFE Trust.
Small business makes up 96 percent of all businesses in Washington and employs about 60 percent of the private-sector workforce. The political endorsement of small business is no small matter. According to a survey conducted for NFIB on and after Super Tuesday this year, NFIB’s own polling of its members, and prior surveys:
Small business owners comprise 15 percent of all registered voters in the U.S., by comparison union voters make up 11.9 percent. When small business employees are added, the small business voting bloc swells to 43 percent.
· The most common public affairs and political activities in which small employers engage include initiating discussions with employees regarding the impact of a policy issue on the firm.
· Voters prefer candidates supported by small business by a margin of 3 to 1 over those supported by organized labor (Winston Group)
· 75 percent trust small-business owners more than doctors, 66 percent, or lawyers, 25 percent. (USA Today/CNN/Gallup)
· 68 percent say small-business owners are more honest than labor unions, 7 percent; the federal government, 3 percent; or big business, 3 percent (Fabrizio, McLaughlin & Associates)
